Why directors are targeted
Company directors and persons of significant control are listed publicly at Companies House — name, role, month and year of birth, and a correspondence address. This openness is a legal requirement and a good thing for trust, but it also hands fraudsters a starting kit for impersonation: enough to craft a convincing scam aimed at you or at people who deal with your company.
Practical protections
- Use a service address, not your home address, for your Companies House correspondence — your home address can be suppressed from the public register.
- Enable Companies House protections such as the register-follow and email reminders so you are told when a filing is made against your company.
- Consider the Protected Online Filing (PROOF) scheme to block paper filings that could be used to hijack your company record.
- Be sparing with personal detail in email signatures and social profiles.
Guard your finance account
Impersonation often aims to reach your money. Lock down the finance account itself: unique password, two-factor authentication, and alerts so any change is flagged to you. We verify your identity as a director before acting on sensitive requests — read how we verify your identity.
If someone is impersonating you
If you learn that someone is posing as you — to us, to a supplier, or to Companies House — report it to us immediately so we can raise checks on your account, and report the wider fraud to Action Fraud and Companies House. See reporting suspected fraud.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hide my home address from Companies House?
You can use a service address for correspondence and apply to suppress your home address from the public register in defined circumstances. Companies House explains the process on GOV.UK.
How does Credit Corp stop someone impersonating me?
We verify identity before acting on sensitive requests and never disclose account detail without it. Strong account security and alerts on your side close the remaining gap.
What is PROOF?
Companies House's Protected Online Filing scheme blocks certain paper filings for your company, making it harder for a fraudster to alter your company record with forged documents.
